Every Week I look to feature and interview a young mover and shaker who embodies the “Go Getta Spirit” and is doing great things for the people and themselves in the Western New York and Southern Ontario community. Having the the blessed opportunity of having my show “The Go Getta Mix” I look to use my platform to acknowledge those people nominated as “The Go Getta of The Week”.
Jamil Crews, founder of Capital Change a native of Buffalo, New York is The Go Getta of The week. Jamil is a graduate of the University at Buffalo, where he received his Bachelors of Arts in African American Studies. Jamil has always been on the front lines of change. From volunteering as a relief worker in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, to raising money for women and children infected with AIDS in Africa for the Keep A Child Alive Initiative, to collecting clothes and non perishables for those devastated in Haiti after the massive earthquake, Jamil recognizes that being a servant is his calling. Jamil is also a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated, where he has worked diligently to be an agent of change in the Western New York region.
Jamil Crews organization Capital Change is a fund raising organization based out of Buffalo, New York. The mission of Capital Change is simple, to engage young professionals in becoming “Changemakers” by providing service and fund raising opportunities that benefit the local community. Capital Change is a place where young, socially conscious people can come together to generate ideas on how to be effective agents of change. They look to partner with corporate companies, small businesses and individuals in creating unique fund raising events to provide key resources to other change-seeking charitable causes. Capital Change is an organization dedicated to engaging young professionals to serve. They recognize that in order to see change, one have to become the change in which they seek.
This year Capital Change is initiating a major fundraising campaign to raise money for Shannon Smith, the Buffalo New York native who became a QUADRUPLE AMPUTEE after developing sepsis and while pregnant with her second child (she also lost her child). Capital change set up an Indiegogo campaign to help with the fundraising efforts. They are looking to raise $10,000 to help Shannon cover the massive medical expenses she incurred, as well as to help her home to become handicap accessible. On Saturday December 1st Capital Change will have the 2nd Annual CHANGEMAKERS: WNY’s Distinguished 30 Under 30 Awards where the money that is raise will be presented to Shannon at the award ceremony.
