On Sunday, September 9, 2012 at 9:00a -1:00p, The Omega Mentoring Program, Inc. will be hosting its 1st Annual “Walk for Sickle Cell Anemia”. The walk will be held at Delaware Park. While the event is fun, the purpose is serious – to increase awareness about sickle cell disease and to raise money to continue our fight to stomp out sickle cell here in WNY.

The Omega Mentoring Program, Inc., is an organization of committed volunteers and mentors who inspire and motivate at-risk youth who are in high school towards college through one-on-one mentoring. Director Cedric Holloway, stated, “The Sickle Cell Walk fundraiser, is a great opportunity for the community to come together and support our youth in their efforts to educate everyone on this disease that effects so many in our very own communities”. One of the members of Omega Mentoring Program, Jael Moore, who is a high school student here in Buffalo,NY was diagnosed with Sickle Cell at three months. Like Jael, nearly 100,000 Americans are affected with this disease, which is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders that negatively impacts the lives of its carriers. It is the most common genetic disease in the United States and occurs in 1 out of every 500 Black/African American births.

The members of the Omega Mentoring Program and its affiliate families have pledged to raise awareness of this life impacting disease. Through education it is possible to reduce the incidences of Sickle Cell Anemia. Please join us in raising the awareness of this disease that greatly impacts the African American community! Come out and support the cause as a participant in the walk, a sponsor or just a spectator on Saturday, September 9th! We look forward to your support of this informative and necessary event. In the event that you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Jacquie Demps at 716.553.4741.
